Gasthaus zum Löwen Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Gasthaus zum Löwen, you immediately get that authentic German guesthouse feeling — the kind of place where locals actually hang out and the staff remembers your name after one night. This three-star property sits right in the heart of Alt-Sossenheim, and honestly, it feels more like staying at a well-run family business than a typical hotel. The building has character, you know what I mean? It’s not flashy, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the whole setup that puts you at ease right away.

Location & Getting Around

Alt-Sossenheim is one of those Frankfurt neighborhoods that tourists often miss, but I actually think that’s part of its charm. You’re still technically in Frankfurt, but it feels like a proper German town with tree-lined streets and local bakeries. The S-Bahn connection gets you into the city center in about 20 minutes, which is honestly perfect — close enough for day trips but far enough to escape the tourist crowds. Plus, there’s free parking right on site, which is practically gold in this part of Germany if you’re driving.

The Room Experience

My room was simple but thoughtfully arranged — clean lines, decent-sized windows, and everything you actually need without unnecessary frills. The bed was surprisingly comfortable (sometimes you never know with smaller properties), and the bathroom, while compact, had good water pressure. What I appreciated most was the attention to small details — proper reading lights, enough outlets for your devices, and blackout curtains that actually work. It’s not going to win any design awards, but you’ll sleep well and feel comfortable.

Breakfast & Dining

The continental breakfast here is the real deal — fresh bread from a local bakery, proper German cold cuts and cheeses, plus the usual suspects like yogurt and fruit. They set it up in a cozy dining area that feels more like someone’s breakfast nook than a hotel restaurant. The coffee is strong (thank goodness), and the staff is happy to point you toward good dinner spots in the neighborhood. I mean, this isn’t a place with room service, but the breakfast alone makes the stay worthwhile.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it strikes that perfect balance between authentic local experience and reliable comfort. Couples seem to especially appreciate the peaceful atmosphere — it’s got that romantic, old-world German charm without being stuffy or overly formal. The 7.9 rating makes total sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price point. You’re not paying for marble lobbies or concierge services, but you are getting genuine hospitality, a great location for exploring both Frankfurt and the surrounding area, and that increasingly rare feeling of staying somewhere with real personality. Plus, the free parking situation is honestly a game-changer if you’re planning to explore the Rhine region by car.

The luxury concierge service in Frankfurt offers personalized access to private banking tours, Michelin-starred dining, and VIP cultural experiences in this international financial hub.

Reviews of Gasthaus zum Löwen

  • Katja from Luxembourg – 9 March 2025 (8/10)

Located ideally for us, very nice staff, clean room and bathroom with all the facilities we needed. Good breakfast.

  • Sam from United States – 21 November 2024 (9/10)

Breakfast was ample and good. Restaurant for dinner was excellent ample portions of traditional German food. Friendly helpful staff.

What could be improved: Doesn’t open until 5 pm.

  • Adam from Australia – 17 October 2024 (8/10)

Gorgeous old pub and delicious food.

What could be improved: The coffee.

  • Carlos from Costa Rica – 14 August 2024 (9/10)

Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great!

What could be improved: Takes some time to get there if you want to use public transportation and if you don't want to wait, an Uber or Taxi from the airport is rhe only option but it is expensive.

  • Gay from United States – 8 July 2023 (9/10)

The food was wonderful. We ate dinner at the Biergarten , great local cuisine, beer and wine. The included breakfast was sumptuous and beautifully presented.

What could be improved: Steep stairs to the room upstairs, which was difficult with a larger suitcase, though the proprietor carried mine.

  • Andras from Hungary – 4 July 2023 (9/10)

Good opportunity to stay in a 200 year old fachwerk building with an authentic bar and restaurant at the ground floor. Food and beverage was typical tasteful German.

What could be improved: Rooms are basically part of an apartment upstairs, but people shouldn't expect five star amenities if choose an authentic accomodation like this.

  • Kathy from United States – 14 June 2023 (9/10)

    Good food, comfortable room

What could be improved: Noisy traffic.

  • David from Czech Republic – 15 March 2023 (8/10)

Perfect for a couple of nights. Clean and comfortable. Nice breakfast and friendly staff.

What could be improved: Restaurant was closed on Monday night, but if I had looked I would of known that beforehand. Pizza and kebab shop right across the road and also a pub serving food a short walk away so it was not a big problem.

  • Alma from Lithuania – 5 July 2022 (9/10)

Really lovely place with nice rooms and good wine and beer. The administrator was really welcoming and made our stay pleasant. Wifi was good, bathroom clean, beds really comfortable. We saw a mini kitchen as well probably for making coffee/tea at your own time, didn't have the time to use it. Soundproof windows. Fan during a hot day and a water bottle. The breakfast is served personally for you and there is really a lot of tasty food❤️

What could be improved: The pleasant mood was ruined by the cleaning lady who made us check-out an hour before the stated check out time. It's not a big problem, just exactly that day we really needed that extra hour to rest along the intensive journey.

  • Katherine from United States – 3 July 2022 (9/10)

This property had a lovely restaurant, where we had breakfast, as well as a nice beer garden.

What could be improved: We had a bathroom across the hall from our room, which we didn't realize when we made the reservation. Also, the hotel was a long way from the train station and airport. However, we still had a comfortable stay there.
